Virtual reality (VR) creates the unique opportunity to bring spaces and their stories to life in a digital environment worldwide. CMb.industries supported Wilhering Abbey in this task. The environment was digitized and embedded with historical knowledge in a virtual platform. The result is VR tours that are accessible online worldwide.
The virtual tour offers visitors three views of the grounds and the sacred rooms of Wilhering Cistercian Abbey. The user can choose whether he/she wants to see info tags with historical background information on the art objects and rooms or whether he/she prefers to explore the abbey grounds without “tags”. The abbey courtyard, the abbey church, the cloister with St. Mary’s Chapel and the mortuary as well as the Benedict Hall, the abbey café and store and a small part of the museum are accessible virtually free of charge.
The VR tour for children is also special. It highlights points in the abbey church that depict animals and their significance in the Catholic faith. The information was compiled by pupils from Wilhering Abbey Grammar School.
