The unique, historic Otto Wagner complex in Vienna is a symbol of humanism and human dignity. Now that its days as a clinical facility are over, one \u201cpatient\u201d remains: artificial intelligence. The complex is now dedicating itself to digital humanism and inviting AI onto the therapeutic couch of insight. <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Guided by the principle of digital humanism<\/strong>, Vienna aims to consistently align digitalization with human needs and to combine technological innovation with democratic, social, and ethical values. The city does not view digital technologies and artificial intelligence as ends in themselves. The focus is on responsible use, equal access, and the strengthening of an open, inclusive, and resilient urban society<\/strong>. Vienna thus seeks to position itself internationally as a model European city<\/strong> where technological progress is combined with social responsibility and the public interest. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Otto Wagner Areal<\/strong> is set to become the physical space where discussions will focus not only on the next stage of artificial intelligence, but above all on its implications for humanity. Nearly 120 years ago, Otto Wagner designed a fascinating ensemble of buildings. His guiding principle was human dignity. After more than a century of use as a hospital complex, the City of Vienna is now guiding the Otto Wagner Areal toward a new future. This unique, historically protected neighborhood will now become a home for culture, education, science, remembrance, research, technology, and humanism\u2014a cradle of new knowledge. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

OTTO – Orientation, Technology, Tautology, Ontology<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The new central question is: What does AI do to our humanity\u2014to our psyche, our society, our dignity, our will, our development, and our creativity?<\/strong> All progress requires awareness. Together with the brightest minds, we\u2019re putting this new era and its products on Freud\u2019s couch. A case history in the spirit of digital humanism. A look in the mirror in the spirit of insight. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn\u2019t about enthusiasm for technology or cultural pessimism. It\u2019s about reflection<\/strong>. About responsibility<\/strong>. About shaping the future<\/strong>. While technology hubs are springing up everywhere, there is a lack of a place that systematically addresses the existential questions of our digital present<\/strong> \u2014in a research-based, cultural, and experiential way. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This question gives rise to a two-part project: a permanent space for conversation and reflection<\/strong> at the Otto Wagner Areal, located in the former administration building, and <\/strong>an annual flagship event<\/strong> that engages the entire site, with the working title \u201cKey Dialogues on the Meaning of Our Existence.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a machine riot, but a social discourse<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the very place where Otto Wagner once designed spaces for healing the human psyche, a space for the psyche of a digitized society can now take shape. The site\u2019s historical mission is being reinterpreted for the modern era: It is no longer about healing individual souls, but rather about shaping an entire society\u2019s relationship with its most powerful tools.<\/strong> This links the significance of the complex to a highly topical debate. Therefore: no tech hype, no machine-smashing\u2014just a space for reflection with social relevance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is explicitly not about building yet another AI center. There are plenty of those already. The difference lies in the approach: in-depth discussions instead of quick demos, reflection instead of apologetics, and a focus on people rather than machines<\/strong>. It is precisely this attitude that makes the place so attractive, as it seeks to establish itself as a responsible player in the public discourse on AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vienna, Freud, and Digital Humanism<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is no coincidence that Vienna is the right place. As the city of Sigmund Freud, it carries within it the legacy of the school of thought that first systematically explored the unconscious. Today, we face a similar challenge: understanding the \u201cdigital unconscious\u201d<\/strong>\u2014the patterns, interdependencies, and dynamics that manifest themselves in our technological existence. The City of Vienna has designated digital humanism as one of its areas of excellence. This project embodies that vision in its purest form. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
